Cultural Context

Mysore Silk weaving traces its origins to the reign of Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali in the 18th century, who established silk cultivation in Karnataka. The craft received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2005, making it the first textile from Karnataka to be thus protected. Today, over 15,000 artisans across 43 villages depend on this 400-year-old tradition for their livelihood.
